Alaskan life

It's pretty cold here in Alaska. I don't even know why I moved here in the first place. There's snow everywhere. I think I'll move to a remote island. Preferably closer to the equator.

Speeches

Ha...hahaha....speeches...sucks, eh bro? Anyways, he's nervous about it. Apparently, he's afraid to screw up or looking stupid or whatever. But, as a brother I should probably help him. Even though he's older than me by 1 minute. But, as an evil twin, I won't. Instead, I'll post his speech up right here.

Education Inequality for African Americans

Did you know that according to the United States Department of Labour, for every seven White people that go to college, there's only one Black person that also attends college? So, that would mean 70 White people to 10 Black people, 700 White people to 100 Black people, and it could also be 700,000 White people to only 100,000 Black people. That's a big difference right? I believe that African Americans should be able to attend school (university or college) at the same rate as White people in North America. I think that everyone should go to school because my mom tells me to do well in school and follow a good career path, so I understand the importance of going to school. There are reasons why they might not be able to attend school. They might not have enough money to attend school, or they might not have received proper education back in high school. It is important for everybody to have a chance to go to school. Everyone can contribute to society. Who knows what they might create.

One reason that Black people can’t go to college is that they can’t afford it. According to the Social Justice Centre, in Toronto, 14% of European families live below the Low Income Cut Off, but the percentage is much higher for Black people. 45% of Africans and Black people live below the LICO. Basically, that means that there are way more people in Toronto that doesn’t have enough money for proper necessities, let alone money for college, that are Black. College costs around $16,300 to around $33,300 per year. If you live below the LICO, then you cannot pay for fees like that.

Another reason that they can’t go to college is that most Blacks or African Americans don’t get proper education before they go to college. SAT test results for Black people trail behind White people by a huge margin. Black, Hispanic and Native American youths nationally stand a 50-50 chance of graduating on time. Not only is there a disadvantage for them to graduate, but they might not succeed when they graduate. Studies show that there are 5 times more White high school graduates than Black. They also show that there are over 7 times more White people enrolled in college than Black people. Those are really big differences. You might be saying “Oh, there are just more White people than Black people.” It's true, most of the people in the United States are White, but there aren't 7 times more White people. African Americans aren’t getting the education that White people are getting because of their skin colour. There's still a lot more people who graduate from high school that are White.

Everyone can change society. Think about Martin Luther King Jr. or Barack Obama. The person who changed thousands of people’s perspective about African Americans or the first Black president. We can be the Prime Minister in Canada, but we have to know what we’re talking about. How can we do that? School. They both had earned degrees for what their job was, whether it was a Ph. D for King or a law degree for Obama. If you don’t get education in college or university, you really wouldn't understand what you're talking about. That is why education is important for everyone.

There you have it. You can see how important it is to go to school, but there are still gaps in education equality because of money, and the fact that some people are still being racist, and giving Black people worse education, even though they could change society.  If you see others being racist, influence them to stop. We can all help.

Thank you for listening to my speech.

Good work eh bro? (Adds sarcasm) Well, I hope you make it to the school speeches, that way, you can be MORE nervous. AHAHAHA.

My brother's report card

My brother says "Report cards are coming up soon. By soon, I mean tomorrow. I know I definitely did worse this term. I hope my French and Math marks can boost, well, everything up." HAHAHA! I'm glad I'm a genius, which means that I already finished school. Seeing him miserable makes me laugh.

Life of February 26, 2010

I've been watching the Olympics lately. A lot of exciting things going on lately. A lot of close calls, too. Some of them aren't great, though. We have 18 medals: 8 gold, 7 silver, and 3 bronze. Curling sucked. CANADA LOST 7-6 IN 11TH END! So close. Oh well.
